Vegan Egg Review Part 1: Vegan Egg Fried Rice

Hey you guys! I decided to forego my planned What I Ate Wednesday post to FINALLY post an initial review on the Follow Your Heart Vegan Egg that I finally got my hands on a few weeks ago. I think that the way I decided to do it is that I am going to try it in different ways that we would use eggs to see how it would work in each situation. What I decided to do first want to just cook it up and add it into some of my Unfried Rice. I tried a little bit cooked as is (kind of like an omelettey scramble kind of thing) and then cut it up and added it into the rice mixture.


As you can see it looks amazing! As I mentioned I tried the "egg" part first and it was ok. I cooked it according to the directions and when I mixed it with the very cold water the consistency reminded me exactly of the lower fat egg substitute that you can get in the store (basically yellow egg whites I believe). It takes longer to cook and turns out quite dense. I added a little black salt to give it more of the eggy flavor and tasted a little. Like I said, it was ok. I don't know if I was underwhelmed by the actual flavor and texture or just disappointed that my mind was not blown like I expected it to be from other reviews that I had read. Or perhaps it was because I spent almost $8 on it and it just wasn't as amazing as I wanted it to be. Was it good and edible? Yes. Was it mind-blowing… no. That being said, when I added it to the rice it was definitely a nice addition and I really enjoyed the meal!

That is not to say that it isn't a good product because I definitely believe it is. However, I think that it may be better used in different ways and I have a few ideas of how to maximize its potential. I am hoping to try the next dish next week and I will be sure to update you on how it works out!

  1. That rice looks amazing! I can't believe how much it looks like restaurant, egg-y fried rice! I can't wait to see what else you do with it. I totally know what you mean about the cost, sometimes I've tried things and I do have higher expectations when I've spent a lot of money, and eight dollars is a lot!
    Can't wait to see the next dish you make using it!

    1. It was very good! The egg was just a bit bland but it was fine. Hopefully it works well in the other dishes I'm looking to make with it.

  2. I'm on my 5th or so carton of the vegan egg, and I think I'm getting the hang of it. You DEFINITELY have to season the living heck out of it. I add black salt, nooch, equivalent Vegg (yolk substitute) to how many "eggs" I've made, and sometimes even some chickpea flour. I cook it way longer than recommended. It does go a bit rubbery, but BF has an aversion to runny egg texture so rubber is preferable.

    My favorite use so far is adding sweet earth benevolent Bacon, green onions, and daiya cheddar to make a messy scrambly omelet. Again I'm adding very flavorful things to this vegan egg, haha.

    I feel you on the initial flavor disappoints. I had them too. Wasn't it fun to watch it scramble as it cooked, though??

    Bianca at Vegan Crunk once recommended using the blender to mix it for ultimate fluffiness. I still need to try that to combat the aforementioned rubbery sitch.

    1. Hi! That was definitely the issue, it was really bland. I could definitely try doing it again with more seasoning but the thought of getting out the blender is exhausting, ha! I definitely think it has its benefits but I don't know if I'm on board with the plain scrambled eggs just yet.

  3. I was just hoping the have some scrambled eggs for breakfast again, but after reading the above comment from Racheyalex, I dont think that will be happening anytime soon. It doesnt sound like the VeganEgg ruined your meal, so that is good.

    1. The vegan egg was fine it was just really bland and not as good as I was anticipating because there was so much hype about it. Maybe I'll give it another go with more seasoning but I also don't want to put a full day's work into it to make it taste good.

  5. Heh, I guess I made it sound like I didn't like it. I actually totally love it, now that I have the aforementioned tricks in my bag to get it how I prefer. I'll be trying it out in fried rice next, thanks to this post!

  6. I think I'm with you on the substitute vegan items: when in something, when well seasoned, they're fine. I tried chickenless strips recently, and really struggled with them in a salad. I need to add them to something to make it more palatable! I'll be interested to see what you use the Vegan Egg in next!

    1. I definitely know what you mean because I often feel the same way. I tried a tiny bite of the tofurkey chicken things and it was pretty terrible. I guess I'm very picky about my vegan substitutes because I wasn't super impressed but I'm sure I'll make it work for what I have left at least!

  7. Oooh, good idea!! For some reason, it hasn't dawned on me yet to use the VeganEgg in fried rice! I really LOVE the VeganEgg soooo much. I do add more black salt, but that's about it. Animal-based eggs are kinda bland on their own, but I always loved that mild flavor. And I think that's why I love the VeganEgg so much. Thanks for the fried rice tip!
