What I Ate Wednesday

Hey everyone. So I sort of followed through on photographing some meals... and by sort of I mean I barely photographed anything but something is better than nothing, right? This'll be a quick one ;)

I've been eating a lot of fruit. This weather begs for cool, refreshing meals and nothing beats fruit. This is a mixture of cantaloupe, strawberries and grapes and I snacked out of this big bowl for a few days. I've got some amazing watermelon waiting for me to devour it next!

Lots of salads as well. This one is romaine, cucumber, tomato, carrot and sun dried tomatoes. Balsamic vinaigrette added later.

I got to snack on the Earth Balance Vegan Cheddar Crackers and wow!! If you liked Cheez-Its you will LOVE these. The flavor is spot on and they are nice and savory. A third to a half cup is all you need to be completely satisfied, yum! I definitely recommend this snack.

These are the Salt & Vinegar Pop Chips. These were also really tasty. I love salt & vinegar so the flavor choice was perfect. The chips are light and crispy and not at all greasy. Definitely a great choice for your potato chip cravings.

You guys, I am so excited about this find I couldn't wait to share it with you! I haven't made it yet but I was FINALLY able to find this frozen Malawach. This is by far my absolute favorite "Jewish food" I've ever had in my life and the last time I ate it was pushing 20 years ago. My cousin made it for me for the first time and it was so delicious. It is basically a flaky, layered fry bread that originated in Yemen but is very popular in Israel now as well. When my cousin came home from Israel she made it for me and I loved it. I have eaten it maybe two or three times in my life because I could never find it but I finally found it in the freezer section of Fairway Market!

Malawach is made similarly to a croissant with the layers and the "butter" and the folding and oy, what a process. I've always been entirely too lazy to make it myself so when I found this I read the ingredients 400 times to see if it was vegan. It contains margarine but the lack of mention of inclusion of dairy (the allergy warnings which I always check first) as well as the "Pareve" label made me feel confident that it is vegan and I grabbed it! In it's frozen form it doesn't look like anything special but when it cooks it gets puffy and flaky and amazing.

Malwach is traditionally eaten with honey as a sweet breakfast (make mine maple syrup) or with tomato sauce as a savory component. I'm going to try it several ways and I'll summarize and let you know which way I enjoyed it most! I'll probably make it for a yummy brunch on Sunday.

That's all I've got for you. I hope you are all having a great week!

  1. That fruit salad looks amazing!! I must eat 5xs as much fruit in the summer.... I hope your watermelon is good- i'm waiting a bit longer to risk my $ on one, i don't think they're ripe locally yet...
Do you measure your snacks??? I've tried those pop chips and they don't quite do it for me unless there's a gob of hummus involved :) the malowich sounds so cool! You'll have to show us what it looks like cooked, i can't quite picture it.

    1. Thank you! I eat so much fruit in the summer too, it's all that seems appealing to me some days! The watermelon is actually really delicious thankfully!

I don't usually measure my snacks, the only reason I know is because the beautiful bowl I used to display my snacks is a measuring cup so I realized in taking the picture that my typical portion is about 1/3-1/2 cup ;)

Malawach is SO GOOD. It's a bit heavy as it is pan fried (I'm going to use cooking spray and not gobs of oil or Earth Balance) but it's amazing and I plan on adding freshness with fruits and veggies. I'll definitely post pics of the different ways that I eat it!

  2. I'm definitely gonna look for the Malowich because Croissants are something I really really miss. What about the Celery with Cinnamon Raisin PB? How'd that go?

    1. I definitely recommend trying the Malawach although it's not exactly like a croissant. The process to make it is like the process to make a croissant with the folding and buttering and repeating but the texture isn't quite the same. The malawach is much flatter and more dense than a croissant. It's more like one of those flaky biscuits you can peel that is much more dense. It's really great though.

The celery with pb was amazing! I'll take a pic the next time I eat it. I'm going to start juicing it too when I have the time :)

  3. Oooh, I can't wait to hear/see more of this Malawach! I bet nothing will compare to homemade one you tasted, though. ;)

A colleague of mine chose this week (why now, at the pinnacle of our stress levels?!) to go raw vegan. Making these statements about how meat and dairy were bad for her body. She lasted about four hours before eating a hamburger. I reminded her to take it slow, and be reasonable! But for me, I was inspired to do the "raw till four" idea, where you eat uncooked food for two meals and then have a cooked dinner. I'm going to try it once I get to the grocery store!

    1. I don't remember if hers were homemade because it was so long ago (I'm guessing they were not though, sadly) but it will be so nice to have a taste of that nostalgia! I can't wait to enjoy it again, Sunday can't come quick enough!

It's really difficult to jump into a raw vegan diet, especially if you haven't done A LOT of research for it. I research for days and days and I still have a really hard time making it work. I think the raw til 4 is a really great compromise and a perfect way to dip your toe into the raw world. I have done the raw til 4 and enjoyed it, I think you will have amazing success and I can't wait to see your meals!

    2. Umm, yeah - I should have done some research, too! It's definitely going to be a journey to get to two raw meals a day. I was in the store, and didn't know where to start or how much I would need to eat! It's a lot of work!

    3. Eating enough is ALWAYS my downfall. I think the easy way to go about it to start is to make a large smoothie for breakfast and a large, colorful, raw salad for lunch and then a sensible cooked dinner. Raw snacks are pretty easy too. You can do it!! I'm going back to doing the Crazy Sexy Diet kind of lifestyle because it's what makes me feel best :)

  4. Vegan Cheeze-Its?!? Now THAT is amazing...yum! I'm glad you found the Malawach! Never heard of that treat, but if you're excited about it, so am I! haha
